Rooted deep: Land Preservation

The Edgecombe County Affordable Housing Land Preservation Initiative, led by Freedom Org, is a multifaceted program designed to address the critical need for affordable housing while simultaneously preserving valuable land resources within Edgecombe County, North Carolina. By strategically conserving land for affordable housing development, this initiative aims to promote equitable access to safe, stable, and affordable housing options while protecting the county's natural and cultural heritage.

What we aim to provide the community

Land Acquisition and Preservation

The program identifies and acquires land parcels suitable for affordable housing development while prioritizing properties with ecological value, proximity to essential services, and transportation infrastructure. Through partnerships with landowners, developers, conservation organizations, and local government, we secure land through purchase, donation, conservation easements, or other mechanisms to ensure its long-term affordability and availability for housing purposes.

Community Engagement and Empowerment

Engaging community members in the planning and development process is essential to ensuring that housing initiatives meet the needs and preferences of residents. The program facilitates community meetings, focus groups, and surveys to gather input from stakeholders and incorporate their feedback into decision-making. Additionally, we provide resources and support to empower residents in advocating for affordable housing policies and initiatives that benefit their communities.

Green Building and Sustainable Design

In alignment with sustainable development principles, the program encourages green building practices and sustainable design features in affordable housing projects. This includes energy-efficient design, renewable energy systems, water conservation measures, and access to green spaces to enhance residents' quality of life, reduce environmental impacts, and lower utility costs.

Mixed-Income Housing Development

Recognizing the importance of mixed-income communities for fostering social diversity and economic resilience, the program promotes the development of mixed-income housing projects on preserved land. By incorporating a mix of affordable, workforce, and market-rate housing units, we create vibrant, inclusive neighborhoods that accommodate residents from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.

Long-Term Stewardship and Monitoring

Once affordable housing is established on preserved land, ongoing stewardship and monitoring are essential to maintain affordability, address community needs, and ensure housing stability for residents. The program implements monitoring mechanisms to track housing affordability, property conditions, and resident satisfaction over time, while also providing support services and resources to help residents thrive in their homes and communities.

Equitable Access and Affordability

Central to the program's mission is ensuring equitable access to affordable housing for all residents, regardless of income level or background. Through income-restricted housing programs, down payment assistance, rental subsidies, and other affordability measures, we strive to make homeownership and rental housing opportunities accessible to low- and moderate-income households, including essential workers, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.
